9th May 2019
Farlam Hall Country House Hotel, the award-winning Relais & Chateaux property near Brampton, Cumbria, has been sold by the Quinion Family to regular guests, Joseph (Joe) Walter and Kathy Mares.
The recent sale of the listed 19th Century 12-bedroom hotel, 6-acre estate and 4 cottages, completed for an asking price of close to £1million.
Based in Seattle the new owners are experienced in the hospitality industry with businesses in California and Hawaii. Joe Walter explained: ‘we’ve been guests and fans of Farlam for more than 20 years. We love the ambience of the house, the great food, and there are few locations in the world with such stunning natural beauty. When it came up for sale, we had to buy.’
The Walter-Mares partnership has appointed Peter and Bb Hall to manage the hotel with immediate effect. The Halls come from 28 years managing Wadenhoe House in Northamptonshire which was recently sold back into private ownership. Peter Hall said: ‘we are thrilled to be managing Farlam and working with a such a loyal and professional team of staff. Taking this beautiful property forward into its next chapter is an exciting new challenge.’ All the staff have been retained, with the sous chef of 17 years taking on the role of head chef (previously Barry Quinion). The owners plan a significant investment to make improvements building on Farlam’s reputation without destroying its character and charm.
‘It was with heavy hearts that we decided to retire after 44 wonderful years at Farlam,’ said the Quinions: ‘but now is the right time. We see this as a positive move for everyone concerned and we wish the new guard the best of success for the future.’
