Now that we have celebrated our 40th birthday, we are absolutely thrilled to receive two wonderful new accolades. The first was from The Good Hotel Guide who have included us in their Top 10 list of special hotels within historic buildings which they have called Ten Castle Hotels fit for Lords and Ladies.
Over the years the readers of The Good Hotel Guide have kindly written to the guide on many occasions praising their stays with us. You cannot pay to be in the guide and all recommendations are carefully monitored by the editors to make sure that no hotel is trying to cheat their way in. These kind reports lead to us being awarded their Cesar Award for top country house hotel of the year in 2001 and to maintaining a Cesar award ever since. This year we have been chosen as one of the Editors Choice of Top 10 Country House Hotels in the country and so many thanks again to everyone who wrote in our behalf.
Our second accolade was from Cumbria Life Magazine who presented the family with a special Lifetime Achievement Award at a wonderful ceremony at Kendal College. All the food and the service was provided by the students and if you are looking for future staff, this does seem a great place to start.
These awards are special because when you have been around as long as we have, you tend to just be part of the background and an accepted part of the country house hotel scene. We would like to say and huge thank-you to everyone from The Good Hotel Guide and Cumbria Life Magazine for giving us and our wonderful staff a big "pat on the back".
Thanks entirely to Barry guiding his chefs through the constantly changing fashions in food, our entry in the Good Food Guide is the longest in Cumbria for any one chef. Another great achievement.
Having enjoyed being given a pat on the back by so many kind people we are now having to start planning for the Autumn and Winter events that we always enjoy so much. These will start with our Autumn brunch which will be on Sunday October 25th at 11.00am and is £29.00 per person. If we can tempt you to stay the night before then the rate will be £125.00 per person and will include dinner, room, the Brunch and V.A.T. – but no breakfast and so you will have to wait until 11.00am!!
Lynne and I will be sorting out the Christmas decorations at the end of November and will start climbing our ladders – Lynne always does the high bits - clutching a hammer and tacks. We will be finished by Friday 4th December and so after then do try to join us to see the house dressed once again for Christmas.
Our Christmas Tea will be on Sunday December 20th at 3.00pm. Once again we will have live professional music to get you in the mood for Christmas. The rate will be £29.00 per person and if you would like to stay that night then the rate for the tea, room, full English breakfast and V.A.T. will be £90.00 per person. Dinner will be available but will be priced per course and so you do not have to go hungry – or eat a full dinner.
On Christmas Eve we will be starting the celebrations with our usual black tie dinner. We love the “end of term” feeling as the shopping and organising is all finished and it is time to relax. We provide hats and crackers etc and there is always a lovely celebratory atmosphere. Dinner will be £55.00.
We close then until December 31st when we re-open and offer a three day package. We do have two rooms left and so please do call if you are interested. We do have some tables for non-residents on New Year’s Eve night for the extended dinner and the price this year will be £85.00.
If you are not able to celebrate on the 31st then why not get the year off to a good start with luncheon in the restaurant on New Year’s Day. We serve at the one time of 1.00pm and the price is £40.00.
We close Farlam on the morning of Monday January 4th for our holidays and re-decorating and open again on Friday January 22nd 2016.
The first event of next year is our wine tasting by Frank Stainton. This year he has decided it will be “The French Connection” and he and Barry will work out the wines and menu for you to enjoy. The wine tasting with the usual full lunch will be £65.00 and our After Lunch rate will be £85.00. This rate includes the room, and two courses from our normal menu, full English breakfast and V.A.T. per person. Nights either side of the 31st will be £125.00 per person, per night for dinner, room, full English breakfast and V.A.T.
The last major event of the Winter is Valentine’s Day on February 14th which this year is a Sunday. Dinner will be £50.00 per person and if you wish to stay the night the rate for dinner, room, full English breakfast and V.A.T. will be £155.00. The nights of the 13th and 15th will be £120.00.
We are then nearly into Spring and we have our two lunch days which are Mothering Sunday on March 6th and Easter Sunday March 27th 2016. On both days lunch will be at 1.00pm and will be £40.00. per person.
I hope that this is not too much information for everyone and please do contact us if we can help in any way. We still serve dinner every night of the week and will open the restaurant at lunch time for parties 10 or more that are booked in advance. We also serve full afternoon teas but need 24 hours advance warning for this.
If we can help with your Christmas presents please remember that we do have our own vouchers. These are available for any amount you wish and they are valid for a full year.
We hope you have a wonderful Winter and that we will have the pleasure of looking after you again here at Farlam Hall.
With best wishes – Helen, Lynne and Barry.
